Denied, Disrespected & Degraded

“Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall
he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say
men at thy giving of thanks, seeking he understandeth
of what thou sayeth?”      Corinthians 14:16.

Sin in the life of a person as well as a nation and culture will take a while for the trespass against God to formulate in the minds of the populace.  It may not be noticeable in the first years, as it lays dormant.  In the first group which embraces the tenets in their minds – just as an alcoholic does not have all the traces of the person who takes or her first swallow of the liquor.

Time is the enemy of we humans in more ways than one.  Time erodes the power within us because the chronology of the future is not known at once, but must grow and thus expand the force of the sin itself. Sin and habits come slowly at first; but then the implosion accelerates once it starts.

In the history of the church sin has then picked up speed in speaking the Gospel. The early disciples of Jews understood the basics of Jesus’ teaching. When preaching is done with non-believers then the evidence must be proclaimed in strength. Our God is not weak but is strong without any apologies. The Holy Bible never deviates from the rules that God says we are to live.

Even though it is not commonly thought in this way the fourteenth chapter of I Corinthians has had a powerful influence upon the style and format of the church and the way we Christians worship the Lord God. The core of this passage is that there was to be order and done decently. The last verse is I Corinthians 14:40.

“Let all things be done decently and in order.”

The influence that writing has upon us is not generally acknowledged and accepted by people –  yet it is there.  These writings shape the way we perform as well as act out our lives. The following are some powerful examples that support this point.

The morals and actions of we humans derives much from Exodus 20 that we commonly refer to as the Ten Commandments told by God to Moses and then spoken to the children of Israel. Governments and people at least pay lip service to these pronouncements of Jehovah God.

Next the three (3) chapters in Matthew 5,6 and 7, are commonly termed the Sermon on the Mount that the Good Master spoke at the start of His ministry to the world although we do not keep the precepts which Jesus delivered to us today. This sermon is used in a “pick and choose way”:

In the realm of politics and government the Declaration of Independence, which was written by that brilliant mind of Thomas Jefferson, has been the North Star for other nations when starting the voyage to rule their citizens. It almost has a Holy tone when read  – as it should.

Such writers in past decades have produced writers such as Charles Colson, the convicted lawyer of Watergate fame.  He brought our attention to the plight of the convicted felon and his own prison time. We should not forget the Gospel should be told to the depressed, as well as the rich.

Sometimes these books and writings are not well known.  Thempact is seen and heard in society because the few were changed. Do not underplay what people write because it is not realistic.

Words have an impact.

JAMES D MURCHThere is a powerful book by James Deforest Murch titled, “Teach or Perish”.  Your author of this blog knew this man and he believed what he wrote because his strong belief was that the church should be restored to the primitive beliefs, as it was in the formative years. His view was that it’s imperative for the church to grow, and there must be Christian education at the local level. This was published by Wm B. Erdman Publishing Company.  A powerful book which has merit.

We Christians cannot depend upon the public schools for our Christian education. On June 25, 1962, the Supreme Court called a halt to prayers in the public schools. This was the start of the decline of Christ in the public forum.

It seems the local Social Gospel churches have swallowed this concept. Do you know of any Protestant or Roman Catholic preacher or priest that condemns the Social Gospel?

Now we have chaos.

When speaking either in a foreign language or sounds that some referred to as gibberish was causing a serious amount of confusion in the church at Corinth. Paul’s instruction was to do nothing which would disrupt the worship of God. We should remember there were issues from within and without the congregations as told to us in I Corinthians 14:16-19.

“For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding
is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with
the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with under-
standing also. Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that
occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at the giving of Thanks. Seeing
he understandeth not what thou sayest?”

It is a characteristic of children to be simple in actions as well as words. Paul told them to think before acting and speaking accordingly to I Corinthians 14:20.

“Brethren, be not children in understanding howbeit in malice be ye children,
but in understanding by men.”

There is a purpose for tongues which can be explained for those who are outside the body who extol Jesus Christ from the writings of Paul. I Corinthians 14: 21-23.

“In the law it is written, with men of other tongues and other lips will I
speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear, saith the Lord.
Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that
believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them
which believe. If therefore the who church be come together into one place,
and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or un-
belivers, will they not say that ye are mad?”

The presentation of Jesus is simple:

  • Believe the word
  • Observe immersion and the Lord’s Supper.
  • Bring others to know Him.
  • Follow the rules of discipline.
  • Keep the character of Jesus Christ.

This has been written in a very basic way but when the book of Acts is read then these rules become clear even though concise.

It is a clear instruction whether you consider it implied or expressed that we as Christians are gathered as a group as the early believers did which was generally on the first day of the week to break bread and to hear the Word of God explained.

This is known today as Sunday which seemingly is for the following activity or maybe other activities:

  • Take the boat to a lake, or
  • Sleep in, or
  • Watch some sport event, or
  • Watch TV, or
  • Look at the Internet, or
  • Do some meaningless event.

In our world today there are only two days some so-called Christians go to a worship service which I call CE days, Christians and Easter.

The remark is often made, “What is this world going to?”  The answer is simple.  To hell!

There is to be a program in the church for education and instruction for those who attend and by no means should it ever be a time of confusion. This is a means of direction and advice how to please God as well as living in a world that is ruled by the Prince of Darkness. Paul understood what should happen because the following verses in I Corinthians 14: 25-28.

“And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest, and so falling down on
his face, he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth. How is
it then brethren? When ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath
a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all
things be done unto edifying. If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it
be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him
speak to himself, and to God.”

There are only a few groups who apparently worship of God in this way. Sunday School is by-gone activity; since if there is one – it is cutting out pieces of paper, singing silly words and clapping their hands. This has produced a group of adults who never mention the mission of the church to produce missionaries for Asia, Africa or Europe. So what is happening on these three continents: The answer is very clear.

War! Murder! Chaos! Socialism! There are two countries which are examples. You might consider France and Mali in the last few weeks.

Actually the United States may be a mission field because of recent situations. The church is under a mandate to teach from the Bible. Paul spoke to this issue in I Corinthians 14:30-33.

“If anything be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be
comforted. And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. For
God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the

The most important question man asks, can never be answered by science or philosophy or governments. The issue is  –  what will you do with Jesus Christ?

Edward Gibbons in his the history of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, states it was the moral and religious decay which undermined the Roman Empire.

We have denied Christ. We have disrespected Christ. We have degraded Christ. Now the price must be paid.

Keep the faith.

“The world all about me has no allure: It’s pleasures bring pain,
It’s wisdom is vain; I seek a foundation that’s steadfast and sure:
I’ll put Jesus first in my life.
The earth’s tribulations continue each day, Tho’ pleasures may call,
Tho’ evil enthrall, His grace will protect me forever and aye:
I’ll put Jesus first in my life.”
