Finding A Leader

“And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood
in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice,
and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye
men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.”  Judges 9:7.

Every four years the United States votes for a leader for our Republic. During this time period all sorts of tales and stories are told to the media. This election cycle has blown into a hateful and despicable event. The media as a whole have decided that the progressive Socialist Democrat should be elected the leader of this nation. This has brought about a whole series of physical violence which has been caused by the words of various people in politics.

As people of God we need a measurement.

Should it be used when we enter the voting booth? As always, there can be found in the Bible the criteria with which we are to judge and to decode who we favor for the political office.

We should always remember that all governments seek to control our beliefs. This is the wonderful and marvelous fact of the Amendments to the United States Constitution – especially the First Amendment. Other nations have not always adopted the view of the First Amendment. It appears there will be a struggle in the future if this continues to go on.  Our Politicians best not seek to remove this prohibition against telling us how we are to worship the Creator.

The struggle would become nasty.

Leaders must keep their principles while seeking the position. This is difficult for any person who desires to conduct the affairs of the future. The physical price often is heavy and sometimes brutal.

These who aspire to lead at times must pay a heavy price. When Adolph Hitler came to power in Germany after WWI he and his followers instigated some very oppressive forms of punishments. As one would anticipate a person who was critical of Adolph Hitler the first place was for that person to be incarcerated in a jail.

Pastor Martin Niemoller MARTIN NIEMOELLERwas a man that paid the price for speaking about Jesus Christ from the pulpit. This brave Pastor spoke the Lordship of Jesus Christ was superior to the Nazi regime. After he had been in jail for a time a fellow Christian came with this message. Here is what the friend told him the authorities had said. He could go back to the pulpit, go back to his life as it was. There was one rule he had to follow. The Third Reich was not to be in subjection to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The friend told him this was simple. His friend said “Martin, why are you still in jail?”

Then Martin Niemoller said to his friend “Why are you NOT in jail?”  The price required immediate action. I have never understood why more of those who say they are opposed to progressivism, liberalism or socialism are just not in jail. There does not seem to be the gut feeling for the fight.

Judges as a whole will not fight. Lawyers want no part of this story. Ministers look at this situation and realize their position would immediately be in jeopardy.

The issues are easy to observe:

Muslims in our nation,
• Abortion of the races,
• Encouraging of blacks in a revolt to law and order,
• Restoring the early church in our world, and3
• Reading the Bible daily.

Men and woman who seek to influence a change in the life style of a culture must inform the people of the wrongs that are being perpetrated upon the population. This second rule is a means with which we seek to educate people on what has happened. Then to inform the result of this sin and what the judgment will produce.

In our nation today, the universities and colleges are now embedded within them – teachers and professors who ridicule God’s word. The morality of Christianity and the Old Testament is not taught as a binding force in society. Then we should ask ourselves a very basic question. How is theft, covertness and greed doing in the United States?

Are we becoming more and more moral in our daily lives? Ha!

Is Hillary Rodan Clinton a moral person  – or is she known to be a congenital liar? Does anyone believe what she says? One man has authored a book called “Liars” which is listening she and her husband’s false statements. Neither one of them are nice people from this writer’s views. These remarks are not written from a political view but from a Christian view.

Scripture tells us that Gideon was a judge in Israel for forty years. He died. Then chaos broke out in Israel. His own son Abimelech, desired to be a king so he could rule all of Israel. We know that Gideon had many women with whom he fostered children.

Even today families divide and split up into factions which is what Gideon’s son Abimelech took advantage of. He went to his mother’s household and asked to be treated differently.

Abimelech must have been a man who could communicate very well because we are told this group endorsed him in Judges 9:3.

“And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of
all the men of She’chem all these words; and their
hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, he is
our brother.”

The next event was his mother’s relations, which gave a large sum of money to him. This was not bad in itself but what this son of Gideon did with the money was in itself evil. This ego driven man took the money and gathered around him men who were evil to the center of the heart. There are men who are evil and always inclined to be violent. These men were of this type because we are told this in Judges 9:4.

“And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out
Of the house of Baalberith, wherewith Abimelech hired
vain and light person’s, which followed him.”

When a leader is presented to us – look at what kind of people that surround that person. This test never is wrong. The character of a person can be observed when you look at his or her advisors. It seems as if this Democratic candidate has brought to her people who are socialist, progressive and marxists. There is no one who speaks of God or a concept of free enterprise. The saying is that the birds of a feather flock together.

In politics it seems that at the highest levels murder is a way of life. In our own nation certain evidence points to this. Here are some names! Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Kennedy and others at lower levels. There have been attempts on others such as T. Roosevelt, Wallace, and Reagan. The pundit Bill O’ Reilly has written a series of books called “The Killing of   …   ”.

Our nation today is no different than in the days of Abimelech. This man slew seventy of his own brothers in an attempt to have power for himself as told in Judges 9:5.

“And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and
slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being
threescore and ten persons, upon one stone:
notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of
Jerubaal was left; for he his himself.”

There was one half-brother who was able to hide.

Then the followers of Abimelech gathered together. This was not a good sign. The blood was about to flow. The name of the half-brother was Jotham.

Condemnation was about to be told to those who were gathered. The speech was short but very patent as found in Judges 9:8-15.

“The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king
over them: and they said unto the olive tree,
Reign thou over us.
But the olive tree said unto them, should I leave
my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God
and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
And the trees said to the fig tree, come thou, and
Reign over us.
But the fig tree said unto them, should I forsake
my Sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be
promoted over the trees?
Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou,
and reign over us.
And the vine said unto them, should I leave my
wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to
be promoted over the trees?
Then said all the trees unto the bramble, come
thou, and reign over us.
And the bramble said unto the trees, if in truth
ye anoint me king over you, then come and put
your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire
come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars
of Lebanon.”

This passage tells us one concept that the vast majority who run for office are non-producers. Look around you and then decide if this is not correct. At the highest level it is trash which seeks office.

So we are taught that we are to examine what has been produced by the office seeker as often is the care the lowest of the law seek office after this speech. Jotham had to run for his life because he would be hunted down and killed.

In 2016 we might have different players, places and times –  but the evil concepts are still the same.

Those who were the associates of Abimelech began to turn against him as told in Judges 9:23-25.

“Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech
and the son of Shechem; and the men of Shechem
dealt treacherously with Abimelech:
That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons
Of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid
Upon Abimelech their brethren.
And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in
the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that
came along that way by them: and it was told
Among evil people there is always a breaking away. Sometimes it was within or it may be a war on the outside. The fact is a war arrives where sin exist then destruction comes. Judges 9:29, tells of the start of a conflict.

“And would to God this people were under my hand?
Then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to
Abimelech, increase thine army, and come out.”

Here are some of the lessons taught by this chapter in Judges:

1. Leaders are required to pay a price,
2. Families will divide among themselves,
3. Murder comes in the highest level of politics,
4. Seldom do politicians produce anything of value, and
5. Look to the Old Testament stories for great truths.

You can read this chapter and see how this plays out today.

“The Lord’s our Rock; in Him we hide,
A Shelter in the time of storm;
Secure whatever ill betide,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

O Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A weary land, a weary land;
O Jesus is a Rock in a weary land –
A Shelter in the time of storm.

A Shade by day, Defense by night,
A Shelter in the time of storm;
No fears alarm, no foes affright,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

The raging storms may round us beat,
A Shelter in the time of storm;
We’ll never leave our safe retreat,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

O Rock Divine, O Refuge dear,
A Shelter in the time of storm;
Be Thou our Helper ever near,
A Shelter in the time of storm.”
