The Devil Himself (Obama)

How Do We Meet Temptation?

“Then was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness
to be tempted of the devil.
And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights,
He was afterward an hungred.”   Matthew 4:1-2.

There are several reasons why we Christians should study and familiarize ourselves with Gods Holy Word. There could be set out several reasons why we must know what the Bible teaches. One very valid reason is how to meet and overcome the temptations of life. So often we believers think that temptation comes in a spiritual realm but this is not always correct even though at most times is just that, a choice between righteousness and evil.

Here is an example when a temptation was spoken to a man who could have gone in a different way. When the war of Northern Aggression started, Robert E. Lee was in Texas. He soon returned to Washington D.C., because his home was what now is Arlington National Cemetery. Lee was an officer in the United States Army. It was then that Abraham Lincoln offered him the command of the U.S. Army.

Robert E. Lee was a  man of great principle and he considered whether he should accept Lincoln’s offer to command the Army.  Lincoln said that he would need to either resign his commission OR side with the state of Virginia. The temptation must have been difficult. He left his commission. He went the Confederacy and History was made. Seldom do you ever see such love of his heritage.

Recently a man sat in my office and said his daughter had married a preacher who was in Egypt attempting to start a church there. In reality this preacher was facing down evil in the religion of the muslims. The temptation must have begun here in America. He made a decision. The desire of safety was not for him.

Yes, it is admitted that temptation is often on a personal basis to commit a sin or not. It can take many forms such as adultery, love of money, lying, stealing or using Gods name in vain. However, we must learn that there is a way to thwart evil and not succumb to the evil.

What we must never forget is that Satan is the master of deception.

He does this in words, deeds, and in other people. Satan is at work right now as we are being filled with propaganda about our enemies and their enemies.  It is so easy to follow the words of the government whether it be federal, state, or local. There is a temptation to accept what is put out. The temptation is so strong that the government knows better than you and I.

We have adopted the socialist and humanist way that supposedly bureaucrats and intelligent people know more than you and I. This is the Roman Catholic way. The priest bishop, cardinal, and pope speak direct from God. Never accept this temptation. It is false. I can read scripture and thus know how to overcome all temptation.

Our Lord spent time alone so that he would be able to know what was coming to him Matthew 4: 1-2 was such a time of readiness. He was alone.

“Then was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness
to be tempted of the devil.
And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights,
he was afterward an hungred.”

Forty days was aware of this time because that number 40 has some significant meaning but this is not known by people as a whole. The body of Jesus had power that we do not possess. How could one go 40 days without food or water if that is the meaning of the two verses. Prayer and fasting are and should be a focal point of the Christian life. The prayer of today are set short and often read. These words are often said without any urgency. These words are not often spoken when people are on their knees.

Fasting among some people in Christianity is common but the Disciples of Christ’s, Methodists’, Baptists’, Presbyterians’, Church of Christ’s and Romanists’ are not known for not eating   …  yet this is taught in the Bible.

As a Christian we understand that temptation will come. This in itself is not an evil that we should seek to sidestep. It was William Barclay who wrote these words “Temptation is not the penalty of being a man, temptation is the glory of being a man.”

Never forget that it is the human race which can make a decision to follow God or to follow Satan.

There are groups of people who seemingly delight in fostering a temptation before us. It is up to each one of us to watch out for our own well being. In short, be careful.

During the Cold War, the Unite States government used the atoms bomb in large areas of Western lands. John Wayne made the movie “The Conquer” which was about Genghis Khan. John Wayne and his two sons checked out the land with a Geiger counter. The counter went crazy. John Wayne thought the Geiger had malfunctioned. The following died from cancer:

John Wayne
• Susan Hayward
• Dick Powell
• Crew members
• 300 Shivwits Paiute Indians.

The problem was before the movie people. Money or no work. The temptation was to work or not. The rule should be that when the United States tells you something – then go the other way.

Each one of us wants to survive thus food takes a special priority in our lives. In order to live there must be food taken into our body. We can go for days when no nourishment is taken into our body.

The first temptation is to satisfy the need Christ must have felt. Jesus has been alone for a month and ten days. It was a form of solitary confinement. Yes, we all like to be away from the movement of human clutter and sound. Here was the extreme of this.

Satan knew who he was bothering with, the need for food must be obvious. Here is what the scripture says in Matthew 4:3.

“And when the tempter came to him, he said, if thou be the
Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.”

The temptation was removed when Jesus quoted from Deuteronomy 8:3.

“And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and
fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither
did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know
that doth not live by bread only, but by every word that
proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.”

When we are tempted it must be realized there are two rules from these two passages. First, look at the problem and determine what it was/is about. Second, when the Holy Scripture is known can the application be found that can decipher this earth. It is the later which people can not apply because formality of scripture is not known.

All of my readers enjoy attention so that people will say that they know us. We humans do this in several ways. The female sex will seek to do this by wearing different colors as well as formfitting garments. Only the demonic muslims dress the women in black and show only small amounts of skin.

We males seek attention in other ways. Talk loud. Brag about some situation. Wear silly hats. Tell others what great athletes we were or are. There are many examples of male attention seeking.

Satan tried another method when Christ was taken to a high structure so Jesus could be seen. Satan knew what David had written in Psalm 91:11.

“For he shall give his angels charge over thee,
to keep Thee in all thy ways.”

Here again Jesus analyzed the problem and used scriptures to set aside the desire for recognition. Matthew 4:5-7.

“Then the devil taketh him up into the Holy city, and
setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
And saith unto him, if thou be the Son of God, cast
thyself down: for it is written, he shall give his angels
charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall
bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot
against a stone.

Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt
not tempt the lord thy God.”

Again, Jesus knew what Moses said in Deuteronomy 6:16.

“Ye shall no tempt the lord your God, as ye tempted
him in Mas’sah.”

You should know you are dealing with the creator.  Stop playing games – or you will lose in the end!

It has always been a trait of human nature to seek to control rule and command others. This is a characteristic of politicians. Eventually all government seek to manipulate its citizens.

This is the reason the Ten Amendments were asserted in the Constitution by the First Congress. Any politician who wants to limit the Ten Amendments should be met with force and reason. Never give these up because once it is done we are subjecting ourselves to a tyranny. The likes of which you have never seen.

All of the kingdoms were seen by Christ and by Satan. The Devil knew these all belonged to him so the offer was made. Matthew 4:8-10 sets out the offer that he told Christ.

“Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high
mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms off the
world, and the glory of them;
And saith unto him, all these things will I give thee,
if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
Then saith Jesus unto him, get thee hence, Satan:
for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God,
and him only shalt thou serve.”

Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 6:13 to meet the opposition.

“Thou shall fear the Lord thy God, and serve him,
and shall swear by his name.”

The first duty you and I have is to serve God. When this is fulfilled then temptation will become less and less.

Matthew puts into play how we are to act.

There are two instructions we can take from the temptation of Jesus:
1. Look at the offer

2. What does the Holy Scripture say about this?

Yield not to temptation,
For yielding is sin;
Each victor y will help you,
Some other to win;
Fight valiantly onward,
Evil passions subdue;
Look ever to Jesus,
He will carry you through.

Ask the Savior to help you,
Comfort, strengthen and keep you;
He is willing to aid you,
He will carry you through.
Shun evil companions,
Bad language disdain;
God’s name hold in rev’rence,
Nor take it in vain;
Be thoughtful and earnest,
Kindhearted and true;
Look ever to Jesus,
He will carry you through.

To him that overcometh,
God giveth a crown;
Through faith we will conquer,
Though often cast down;
He who is our Savior,
Our strength will renew;
Look ever to Jesus,
He will carry you through.
