Knowing What’s What

“But to us there is but one God, the Father,
of whom are all things, and we in him; and
one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things,
and we by him.”      I Corinthians 8:6.

Decades ago there were three men who were known as the Three Stooges. These men by the use of words and silly actions produced some of the greatest comedy skits then and even now will cause the watchers to burst into laughter. The skill of their actions and rapid fire of words were hilarious. The truth is these three men gave us classics which have been seen by several generations.

The people of the United States sense that there is something wrong with modern day Protestant and Roman Catholic Church organizations. This is the reason the conservative independents groups have grown. The liberal group who were once organizations that were supposedly the core of Christ church is fast receding in their brick and stone structure. The power of the message of sin, righteousness and judgment is not preached. The sooner they rush into oblivion the better. The comments and actions of these groups mimic the Three Stooges. You can see silly acts and constant meaningless words.

What is not thought through by people that other nations and empires have gone through the same deterioration as we are doing. It was the Wm B. Erdman Publishing Company that printed “The Fall of the Roman Empire.” In this massive work it stated that on September 4, 476 A.D. Rome fell. Here is a list of groups who started out as immigrants.

  • Visgoths
  • Franks
  • Anglos
  • Saxons
  • Ostrogoths
  • Burgandeans
  • Lombards and
  • Vandohs

First they were the working class but they did not learn Latin or would not learn Latin. Rome had a trade deficit. Taxes rose and rose. Rome lost its soul. Vices conquered these people.

As one reads Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and the minor prophets the same scenario was acted out. In fact all man-centered empire is the same.

The United States started the empire building in its western expansion – but it got under way under President William McKinley, in 1891, when it was decided to take the Philippine Islands. The conquest was to make them Christian. Missionaries were all ready there. McKinley killed 220,000 natives. From that time on we decided to push our way of life on people.

Believe it or not there are people who like living under a dictator.  You might like it  …  They do.

It always happens this way that a government tries to snuff out Christianity. Rome did. Muslims have tried to destroy Christians. France did on St. Bartholomew’s Day. England jailed preachers. Now the United States now is jailing a County Clerk in Kentucky because she will not issue a marriage license to queers. The Bible says homosexuality is a sin. Did you ever read about Sodom? This was a city of queers.

KNOWLEDGE

In this time period there is so much emphasis on acquiring knowledge. Our task is to get legislators to build edifices so we can graduate youth with degrees. Yes, this is important but think about what the people with knowledge have placed us in areas of danger. It was Paul in I Corinthians 8:1 who said be careful.

“Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have
knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.”

Knowledge will cause trouble. Paul said it puffs up people.

Each year there are doctors of various disciplines who meet in the United States. Each year I buy their audio that I listen to. 2015 was their 33rd meeting. Their organization is called, “Doctor Against Disaster”. As I listen to them,  each one will select a field and pick apart some other expert in that field saying their analysis is incorrect. Paul understood this in I Corinthians 8:2.

“And if any man think that he knoweth anything, he knoweth nothing yet
as he ought to know.”

Because a person is an announced expert that does not mean he or she knows it all.

The way we acquire knowledge is to know God. First the deep feeling toward God must be present. The word love here has the meaning of a social or a moral way. God sets the pattern how we act. This word was not used by the apostle lightly. It was a word of prayer. Paul used it, love, to say the way we discover knowledge is to “love” God. I Corinthians 8:3 tells us this.

“But if any man love God, the same is known of him.”

A moral sense and a social order are means to power for us.

CONCERNS FOR ACTS

In the Western world there has been a form of worship wherein certain animals are killed and then burned with fire. This was often done on an altar. The Old Testament is replete with such actions.

Moses said there is only one God!  I Corinthians 8:4 so states it also.

“As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice
unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none
other God but one.”

Here is what the Torah says in Deuteronomy 4:39.

“Know therefore this day and consider it in thine heart, that the Lord he
is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.”

Of course people will state there are several gods. This is how men try to compete with the Almighty. Paul recognized this is I Corinthians 8:5.

“For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth,
(as there be gods many, and lords many).”

If there is one God then only one set of rules. Men do not care to hear this. Different gods from many rulers.

ONLY ONE

I Corinthians 8:6 is one of the most forceful and straight forward verses in the Bible. Paul states this is the way it is. One God.

“But to us there is but one God, the Father of whom are all things,
and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, for whom are all things,
and we in him.”

In short, I do not even think about many gods. The Bible is straight forward. There is no issue brought up that many gods exist. This is another invention of men. You might think on these statements:

  • Man has no other explanation of the world but God
  • Nature has a pattern in its existence
  • Man wants a Spiritual being to help him
  • His rules are perfection
  • He is the only one who can help us because He Sees and Knows all.

In this age we live there are some who say there is no God. These people are fools. Their work is self- centered. It is common for the church not to rise up and condemn these clowns. There are no valid arguments that God does not exist. It is strange that from those who acknowledge God that great works come about. Look at the following:

  • Who started hospitals?
  • Who started schools?
  • Who teaches law and order?
  • Who stands against corruption?
  • Who built insane asylums?
  • Who ————————–? (you fill this in)

You fill in the blanks.

Can you name a hospital for the ill that was started by an atheist?

The public schools are trying to destroy any form of righteousness and they are aided and abetted by the Supreme Court of the United States. The war to destroy Christianity openly got under way in the 1960’s.

USED COMMON ILLUSTRATIONS

The Bible writers often used illustrations to show the meaning of certain concepts which God wants used in the daily life of a person. The meat was sold after a portion of the animal was burned as a means to please some created god. This was causing a serious issue among some believers. The issue was what started out to be used to placate a non-existent God was being eaten by Christians.

Paul met the issue head on in I Corinthians 8:1-8.

“Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have
knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.”
“And if any man think that he knoweth anything, he knoweth nothing
yet as he ought to know.”
“But if any man love God, the same is known of him.”
“As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in
sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and
that there is none other God but one.”
“For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth,
(as there be gods, many, and lords many).”
“But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom we are all things,
and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and
we by him.”
Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience
of the Idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their
conscience being weak is defiled.”
“But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better
neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.”

Paul never played around in attacking some trouble or sin. In this case he said go ahead and eat the meat.

However there was a restriction placed upon this freedom to eat the meat. His instruction was do not do something which becomes a wedge that divides Christians or your fellow believers. Paul was emphatic about this in I Corinthians 8:9-11.

“But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumbling
block to them that are weak.”
“For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol’s temple,
shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those
things which are offered to idols.”
“And through the knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ
died?”

In the present age there are situations which we should be careful in doing anything which is an impediment to another Christian’s belief. There should be an attitude that controls our behavior before God and men. In our society there are some who do not care what others think.

There are many abstractions which are seen – food, cars, alcohol, travel, clothes, etc; It not only applies to physical aspects but also to spiritual areas also.

We who seek to be purist in all matters of the New Testament church states that we should only follow the pattern set out. The following are some of the divisions found in the body of believers:

  • Church buildings
  • Immersion
  • Tithing
  • Women in Leadership
  • Professional leaders
  • Civil rights
  • Government over the Christians
  • Church ownership of property
  • When to meet

We must be careful what we do.

Paul in I Corinthians 8: 12-13 states that it is a sin to show no concern for people who act differently than we do.
“But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience,
ye sin against Christ.”
“Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the
world standeth, lest I make by brother to offend.”

In short, respect others and their opinions so long as it does not violate the commandments in the New Testament.

I AM THINE O LORD

“I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me; But I long to rise
In the arms of faith, And be closer drawn to Thee.
There are depths of love that I cannot know
Till I cross the narrow sea; There are heightsf
of joy that I may not reach Till I rest in peace with thee.”
“Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To the
cross where Thou has died, Draw me nearer,
nearer, nearer blessed Lord, To Thy precious bleeding side.”
