Mentoring The Church

“For yourselves, brethren, know our
entrance in unto you, that it was not
in vain: But even after that we had
suffered before, and were shamefully
entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we
were bold in our God to speak unto you
in the gospel of God with much contention.”                           I Thessalonians 2:1-2

The foundation of the church requires the same care and concern that we should give a baby when growing.  There must be compliments as well as discipline given to the young child.  To expect a child to obtain adulthood without teaching is absurd.  There must be moments  of instruction heaped upon the child.

The church of Jesus Christ is no different.  There must be correction and rules explained to the church.  No one in this age of know it all culture is capable of formulating any plan to perfect a church.  When this happens you can expect such discord, derivesness and destruction.  Such creeps as the prosperity gospel preachers will reek havoc on the body of Christ and they do.

This is seen in the black community among the males.  A high percentage the young males have been in prison.  Then among the females this is the birthing of children who are bastards.  The recent tragic event in Ferguson, Missouri was obviously an illustration of a young black who did not have a job.  He assaulted a police officer.  The young man had not been corrected or disciplined early on.  Tragic!  This is but one example of the need of a mentor in this black man’s life.

The problem is we let the media tell us what happened.

What the book of I Thessalonians tells us is that Paul was trying to encourage the church that we had started before.

IN THE BEGINNING

It was the Apostle Paul who started this congregation after he left Philippi: Since this was his creation it was only natural there would be a heart-felt concern for their well-being.  This letter was written from Corinth by Paul probably around 51 or 52 A. D.  He knew humans.  When action is not taken and when confusion arises it will soon fester into a huge mess.  Thus the letter.

This mental giant knew human nature.  The first thing he did was to commence his words in a gentle way.  I Thessalonians 2: 1-2 reads as follows:

“For yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you, that it
was not in vain: But even after that we had suffered before and were
shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Phillipi, were bold in our God to
speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention.”

From the very beginning his preaching was plain and straightforward.  See I Thessalonians 2:3-4.

“For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor uncleanness, nor in guile:
But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel; even
So we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.”

Paul had none of the lies, falsehoods and frauds of the modern politicians.  It is so common for these actions of politicians that when we hear the truth it is startling.  Your writer tries to never depend upon them and always try to verify the remarks.

Paul recounted in this letter that his words were not pleasing but these words were from God.  This was his approach in the beginning.  Paul never tried to honey coat the remarks.  All of the letters were straight and truthful.  It was this approach that people liked.

Notice another remark that he stated that in the beginning he had not coveted what they had.  This man was not a thief.

In the church today as well as universities of a denomination there is the calling on those who have money.  The gimmick is to put their name on the rock coming into the edifice.

Have you ever seen a building named after a poor righteous human?  Of course not!  It will be a cold day in hell when you do.

The approach Paul had was to tell how it started.  Remember how it began.  He presented only the gospel.

LIFE WAS EXAMPLE

In our world today the ministers, priests and preachers among evangelistic churches leaves much to be upheld.  The sins among professionals are alcohol, women, money and power.  Now the politicians and church leaders have much in common in this aspect.

The saving factor of politicians is that these people can do all of this in Washington, D.C   where the voters never see them.  These people have a wall erected that is not penetrated.  There are exceptions such as Wilber Mills of years ago who got drunk with a whore and took a dip in the tidal basin near the Jefferson Memorial.

Now preachers get caught up with women (sex).  Normally what is done to the preacher is he rises to the pulpit and asks forgiveness and always sheds a few tears.  The stupid church members forgive, money can be a problem to preachers but most of the time it is not.  Maybe a pension comes into play.

Paul reminded them that he had not done any of this.  His life had been an example for the Gospel only.  See I Thessalonians 2:9-10.

“For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night
and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached
unto you the gospel of God. Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and
justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe.”

Paul states the reason for the letters.  He said my example for you was in the beginning:

See I  Thessalonians 2:11.

“As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you,
as a father doth his children.”

What was taught to this church in the beginning was sent from men but the word from God.  We as Christians must attack all approaches to deny the truth of the scripture whether it be by church leaders, seminaries or atheist.  Attack!  Attack! And Attack!

Recently I read or heard that an official in Turkey who said Christianity now is not a religion but a culture.  This is an uncomfortable remark but it may be near as being true.

SATAN IS INVOLVED

Things have a way of coming back upon us.  What I am about to write is actually funny when considered.

The first known virus was developed by two Pakistani brothers.  The first time this virus was detected was in January 1986.  The infected computers were frozen and could not function.  The virus was a Trojan Horse that froze the instrument.  Finally the two brothers were located and a man went to see them.  One of their complaints was that people were infecting their computer.  Could it be what goes around comes back around?

We Christians are having to deal more and more with the world.  Paul said suffering was inevitable.  He certainly had his share of persecution.  He was to have more heaped upon him.

It is expected that violence will happen to us as Jesus predicted this:  See John 15:20:

“Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than
his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if the
have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.”

Satan will enter into our lives as we live.  At this time in the United States 36% of the newborn are bastards.  In about 15 years this will have enormous repercussions.  The pulpit has not stood up and said stop this.  From this fact alone will come the following:

·       Increase of crime

·       Increase of sexual misconduct

·       Increase of government handouts

·       Increase of murder

·       Increase of social funding

·       Increase of bastards

·       Increase of politicians

The church would not take a stand thus we get what we deserve.

THE GOAL

There is an end that Paul sought for this church and it was very simple.

First, he wanted them to have direction.  This could be put another way that there was to be some mission to accomplish their goal.  This was hard.

Second, his instructions were to have intelligent good will toward each other.  That is a hard saying.

Third, this intelligent good will is to be done toward all men whoever they are.  This even harder in this day and time.

Fourth, Paul set this example for action.  We are to examine his life.  Use it for the spreading of the Gospel.

Fifth, the reason for this is to establish holiness before God.

Sixth, the reason for this is to be prepared for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

The intent of the purpose of this blog is to give to each person reading it a pattern to live out their life.  During the blog there is an attempt to weave into the short pages every day situations that can be observed to that passage of scripture.  Unless a writing is useable then and now the value is nothing.  The great value of Christianity is that a person can live by the tenets which are without question the word of God.  Your author makes no apology for what is put down on paper or the internet.  The truth has been set forth.  In some cases I try to analyze the past so the future will be seen.

The letters that Paul wrote to the churches have meaning and purpose for you and I today.  Without Christ there is no meaning to life.

“O Jesus, Thou art standing Outside the fast-closed door,
In lowly patience waiting, To pass the threshold o’er:
Shame on us, Christian brethren, His name and sign who bear;
O shame, thrice shame upon us, To keep him standing there.
O Jesus thou art knocking; And lo, that hand is scarred,
And thorns Thy brow encircle, And tears Thy face have marred.
O love that passeth knowledge, So patiently to wait!
O sin that hath no equal, so fast to bar the gate!”                             Knight/Husband
