Man is in God's Hands

Our Task

“But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:”

“These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all
authority. Let no man despise thee.”  Titus 2:1,15.

From the beginning of creation mankind was instructed that he had tasks to perform. The human race is never to sit and do nothing. God put the human race to certain task which was for our benefit.

There was a discussion about what man was to do. In Genesis 1:26, the first assignment was to have dominion over the sea, the air and the land.

This means that we rule and possess the power of control.

“And God said let us make man in our image, after
our likeness; and let them have dominion over the
fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over
the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every
creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”

Then the second instruction was to be fruitful, that is to reproduce and give forth other humans who would fulfill the plan of God. From the inception of our creation there was to be a multiplying process of humans as read in Genesis 1:28.

“And God blessed them, and God said unto them,
Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth,
and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish
of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over
every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”

The point that is made in this first chapter of Genesis is we have certain responsibilities which cannot be set aside. The commands are immutable. However, the underlying principle is follow the task that has been stated in Genesis. This further extends also when we read Genesis 2. There can be no deviation from the responsibility that God has said to do.

The culture we are a part of is the opposite. In today’s world, the belief is to let the government tell us what is to be done. It sets the pattern of our life individually. This is a clear violation of Jehovah’s instruction. Here are some present denials of these two basic commands.

• Abortion – destroys life
• Dump garbage into the seas
• Spew chemicals in the air
• Pour toxic chemicals on the land, which makes it sterile.

One must never forget that the Lord has set up the boundaries of our work on earth.

Here is the problem that we humans face. Within these bounds as set out by the only God each one of us should find our place on this globe which he has provided for us. In observing human action, it seems without a doubt that a huge percent of humans never comprehend their task on earth, they wonder, they care even less, they flounder. It is the few who know what should be done. The reason this blog is written is to help you find your way or task.

There can never be any excuse for the reader of this blog today but to look at yourself and decide whether you are coming to grips with your destiny. In short take care of business.

What Paul was doing was telling Titus when you go to these churches then talk to the various age groups and then go into detail with that age selection what these people are to accomplish. The apostle was saying we all have a task(s) to perform.

All groups of people have one basic responsibility that is to have and to teach sound doctrine. This is an area where the modern Christians have failed and it is so obvious. In Titus 2:1 Paul set this out in a way that it must apply to all ages whether they be young or mature. So first all must possess this in their thought pattern as written in Titus 2:1.

“But speak thou things which become sound doctrine.”

The doctrine consists of the life, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Then we are to believe, confess, repeat and be immersed in water. Then to follow the instructions how to live the life Christ taught. Be careful when you listen to each group as the following:

• Disciples of Christ
• Methodist
• Presbyterians
• Episcopal
• United Church of Christ
• Baptist (all groups)
• Roman Catholics
• Non-denominational groups
• Feel-Good groups on T.V.

In order for you to know doctrine you must read and study the Holy scripture.

One characteristic of aged men is laughing is not a dominant factor. Events and words can be humorous but never silly. The young will laugh quickly at almost anything, then the point should quickly be seen.

Paul put the mature men in a separate category. The commands are straight to the point in Titus 2:2.

“That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate,
sound in faith, in charity, in patience.”

Except for purposes of war and battles God used mature men to carry out this instruction. Here are some examples:

• Elijah
• Isaiah
• Jeremiah
• Nehemiah
• Elisha
• Ezra
• Abraham

The reason for this would be that life’s experience has tested these people.

The reason is not given but Paul devotes longer instruction to mature woman as told to us in Titus 2:3-5.

“The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour
as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not give
too much wine, teachers of good things;
That they may teach the young women to be sober,
To love their husbands, to love their children,
To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient
to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”

In reading this passage it would appear the mature females have two areas of responsibility which are first: to teach younger women – then second, to care for their husbands.

As we look at these two elements of responsibility, younger women should be instructed that fashion passes quickly. One day it is high heels – the next day it is flats for the feet. One day it is no hose, the next day it is dark stockings. Mature women should tell these young women not to be taken in by the fools.

My wife had her own boutique in Odessa,TX. It was observed that even different colors become factors also. She was so successful that even the designer Oscar De La Renta came to her business. There are very few women’s stores that can make that statement. I have a sense of knowledge about fashion.

The final purpose is to see that the Gospel is never blasphemed. That it is slowly not be ridiculed. The young are to be taught. In our present situation the church has failed to help younger women.

When I was training in the infantry at Fort Ord, California, we would be instructed to know our weapon. It was my duty to know the rifle and also the BAR, browning automatic rifle; which was a bulky 30 caliber semi-automatic to carry. It took a young man to perform with such a weapon. The point is that it was mostly the young males that do this.

Young men must learn to control their passions. They must be taught how to be serious and to be sincere.

The locker room words as well as the work habits are not to be described with vulgarity. In Titus, 2:6-8, they’re laid out very bluntly:

“Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.
In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works:
In doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
Sound speech, that cannot be commended; that he
that is of the contrary Part may be ashamed, having
to evil thing to say of you.”

The physical work is to be accomplished by young men. Acts 6:2-3, tells us this. It does not say young men but it certainly can be implied from the contents of the passage.

“Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples
unto them, and said, it is not reason that we should
leave the word of God, and serve tables.
Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven
Men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom,
whom we may appoint over this business.”

There is an undertone in Titus 2:6-8. Young men must think before they speak.

There are times when it is difficult to work for certain employers. In this age, the corporations have removed themselves from morality. This is not all corporations, but a large group have sought to exclude themselves from any sense of Godly morals.

When this happens then the employees should leave and go to another position of work. Here are some companies that seem to be bent toward corruption:

• AT&T
• Large Banks
• Institutions – that the government controls

As a Christian, you need to hold to the position to be a follower of Christ. It behooves me to be in an environment that proceeds Godly living.

Employees in this age have a sense of loyalty. The economic changes may not be known nor rejected. The age of entitlement is going to disappear soon. The Church of Believers must teach the younger generation what the Bible instructs on making money.

The final versus in this chapter instructs us what the future holds. What we hope and seek is to be taken up with Christ when time ceases. The ending verses in Titus 2:13-15, are as follows:

“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious
appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from
all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people,
zealous of good works.
These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority.”

This ending is a means by which we can relate.
The reason for our acceptance of Christ is the blessing which comes at the end.

Sound the battle cry!
See, the foe is nigh;
Raise the standard high for the Lord;
Gird your armor on,
Stand firm, every one;
Rest your cause upon His holy Word.

Rouse, then, soldiers, rally round the banner,
Ready, steady, pass the word along;
Onward, forward, shout aloud, Hosanna!
Christ is Captain of the mighty throng.

Strong to meet the foe,
Marching on we go,
While our cause we know, must prevail;
Shield and banner bright,
Gleaming in the light;
Battling for the right we ne’er can fail.

O! Thou God of all,
Hear us when we call,
Help us one and all by Thy grace;
When the battle’s done,
And the victory’s won,
May we wear the crown before Thy face.
