Short on Memory – Short on Faith

“And an angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to
Bo’chim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt,
And have brought you unto the land which I sware
Unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my
Covenant with you.”  Judges 2:1.

When reading Judges 2, it is easy to become confused whether it should be where it has been placed or whether the chapter would better placed at the conclusion of the book of Judges. This great writing lays out the lives of various people who rose up to do God’s work among the twelve tribes when they settled in the land of promise.

It really is not important to say the stories should be in the front or at the end. What is being written is that there is a pattern of people and it matters not of what people but a nation soon forgets the fundamentals of how it was formed.

American Protestants until after the Civil War held the Bible to be without error. Then it happened. Young ministers were sent back to Europe to receive higher Christian training especially in Scotland, England and Germany. There arose from Union Theological Seminary, Yale, Harvard, and Chicago universities a liberalism taught from these schools. This thought process has been the down fall of such groups as Disciples of Christ, Methodist and Presbyterians just to name a few.

A terrible price has been paid as a result of a demonic criticism of the Bible.

It took a while but the results were inevitable. It was really after WWII that the results were observed. This affected our social, economic and legal systems. The following are direct results of this mind set:

• Judgment is seldom physical for a crime
• Depending upon government for our wants
• Little respect for any authority
• Increase of fatherless homes
• Schools are babysitting institutions
• Sports are more important than scholastic endeavor’s
• Decrease in moral teaching in all areas of life.

We are now in the battle for the minds and souls of men.

It was brought about because the Protestant church has adopted the thinking of those who will not accept the word of God as a means to live their lives out.

Have you noticed that nearly every year there is a new Bible translation? You have seen many of them. The attempt has been to put Holy Scripture on “our level”. These translations come and go. Their worth is less than zero because such are printed on paper which had other uses than some silly translation of what the Greek or Hebrew said in the original text.

A better use of the paper would be to have used it for paper towels. Men seek to subvert the intentions and commands of God.

The word covenant is used again and again in the Old Testament. In fact, the Lord’s Supper is called a covenant in I Corinthians 11:25.

“After the same manner also he took the cup,
When he had supped, saying, this cup is the new
Testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink
It, in remembrance of me.”

God has sent to men, messengers who have made certain announcements that foretold the future at times. They were glorious events which would unfold while others were words of doom and gloom. The angel was right to the point. When it was started it was God who brought the sons of Jacob out of Egypt into this place. A covenant had been made with these people.

The place where they were reminded of this event was at Bochim; this site is not mentioned but twice in scripture under that name.

In our lives, different sights have special meaning for each of us as a person and a nation. You may recall the first time you went to Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington Cemetery. The silence was gripping. It may be when you stepped into a spot of your youth for you it may have been a sacred spot. You knew then and you know now it was a special piece of earth. These Jews knew that Bochim was that place.

There are trade agreements that the socialist-leaning muslim-liking man in the White House has made agreements with some of the most evil people on this planet. The latest trade agreement with Iran which Donald Trump condemns is a disaster for the United States.

There are other treaties, if one can call them a treaty. They are certainly not to our benefit as a nation. It seems we are negotiating another agreement every month. The arabs have needed some net of safety against their own kind. These people are treacherous to deal with.

When the angel from God spoke it was obvious the truth was set out. Judges 2:2-3 was blunt, truthful and candid. This rule applies to us today.

“And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of
This land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have
not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?
Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before
You; but hey shall be as thorns in your sides,
And their gods shall be a snare unto you.”

These Godless people were without any honor or reliability. Have times changes from then until now? Here is what the situation and problem was about.

Worshiped false gods
• Built altars to false gods
• Caused Israel to sin
• Israel would be constantly upset by them
• Israel’s judgment would be muddled
• Accept pagan ways.

Look at our ways now. The pattern of evil is evident.

Eastern religion is in our churches as well as Islam,
• Allowing non-Christians in positions of power,
• Permitting mosques to be built in the United States,
• Turmoil is fomented daily in our nation by the muslims,
• Judgment by leaders is flawed, and
• Pagan ways are given authority as civil rights.

Clear thinking is gone from any political discussion.

The only agreement that could be made is ruin  –  when one side has for its theme; to steal and commit acts of fraud.  This will be the final production of our way of life.

There was remorse among the children of Abraham. Words can be as powerful as a physical force. It can be even stronger, sometimes it may be just a few words. The words of FDR in the depression of “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”.   When he said that December 7, 1941 “will live in infamy”.

Ronald Reagan’s speech in Berlin is a classic “Mikhail Gorbachev, tear down that wall”. We could weave our way through history and hear words that have caused men to act.

When the angel spoke the people were touched in a way that repentance came and the emotions were brought to the forefront. There was a time when the sinful ways were removed, but it did not last. Because total commitment was never present. A return came but change was short lived because Judges 2:5 tells a sacrifice was made to God.

It is a characteristic of all men to not remember the contributions that some men make to society as soon as that person leaves the scene of the living. At my age that has happened several times during the decades of my life. There were four men who literally put Odessa where it is today. Here are four names which should never be forgotten because of the assistance they made to the advancement. It was mainly due to their efforts to build the University of Texas of the Permian Basin to this city:

John Ben Shepherd brought political know how to the state government.
• “Pinkie” Roden understood how to persuade the state legislature.
• Rodman/Noel money was a big element of persuasion.

Yes, others helped but these four gave money and were the shapers of the future.  The result was a university. I know each one of these men.

When the life of Joshua is seen then we know here is a forgotten person who should be discussed often yet are not. Judges 2:6-10, lets us seek the virtues of this holy man warrior.

“And when Joshua had let the people go, the children
of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to
possess the land.
And the people served the Lord all the
days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that
outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the
Lord, that he did for Israel.
And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord,
died, being an hundred and ten years old.
And they buried him in the border of his
inheritance in Timnath–heres, in the mount of Ephraim,
on the north side of the hill Gaash.
And also all that generation were gathered unto their
fathers: and there arose another generation after
them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works
which he had done for Israel.”

Joshua: his name should never be forgotten. There were many other prophets but it was Joshua who was the coherent force in Israel when Moses died.

Behind every great movement you will find one person that was the power in the movement. Look around you and your observation will be the same.

These Jews were told that it would happen quickly. It was swift and sure. In a few short words God was removed from the nation as way of life. What these people did was serve Baal and Ashtaroth. These two names refer to a form of demonic worship that removed God from the character of people. From what we read it was something which was fast in happening.

We see it happening each day in America – Judges 2:11-13.
“And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord,
and served Ba’alim:
And they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which
Brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed
Other gods, of the gods of the people that were round
About them, and bowed themselves unto them, and
Provoked the Lord to anger.
And they forsook the Lord, and served Ba’al and Ash’taroth.”

God was disgusted with the Jews that His command to remove the heathen was not followed. They were a part of the landscape. This was a thorn in the Jews side.

When evil and truth are side by side it is not a creation of goodness but a creation of evil like you have never seen. Purge yourself from evil.

You must learn to recognize evil for what it is: Destruction.

Are ye able,” said the Master,
“to be crucified with me?”
“Yea,” the sturdy dreamers answered,
“to the death we follow thee.”

Lord, we are able. Our spirits are thine.
Remold them, make us, like thee, divine.
Thy guiding radiance above us shall be
a beacon to God, to love, and loyalty.

Are ye able to remember,
when a thief lifts up his eyes,
that his pardoned soul is worthy
of a place in paradise?

Are ye able when the shadows
close around you with the sod,
to believe that spirit triumphs,
to commend your soul to God?

Are ye able? Still the Master
whispers down eternity,
and heroic spirits answer,
now as then in Galilee.
